Puppy Care

We recommend all puppies have a full health check with our vet. During this initial check-up, we can run through the basics of what your puppy needs, such as vaccinations, microchipping, diet, insurance, neutering and parasite treatments.

Worming Treatments

All puppies and adult dogs should be wormed against roundworms and tapeworms. Puppies are wormed every 2-3 weeks until they are 12 weeks old. Then they are wormed once a month until 6 months old. Adult dogs should be wormed once every 3 months. For clients concerned about excessive worming treatments, we can offer faecal testing every 3 months for gut parasites.

Nasties

Flea and tick treatments can be applied as preventative once every month (or every 3 months, depending on the product). Our clients who are concerned about the excessive use of anti-parasite treatments can be used based on a risk assessment or applied during times of high risk. We offer free flea checks and tick removal services.

Vaccinations

Puppies are vaccinated against Distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and leptospirosis 2 or 4. These are given at 8 weeks old with a second injection at 12 weeks old. We would recommend the first DHPL annual booster. Going forward, DHP can be performed every 3 years; Lepto 2 or 4 would be performed annually. There is an option for serology blood tests for those owners concerned about repeat vaccinations.

Dog Neutering

Neutering is known as castration for males and spaying for females. Neutering your pet provides many benefits, including preventing unwanted pregnancies. In all cases, the procedure is carried out on-site and requires a general anaesthetic for the surgery in our dedicated operating theatre.

We recommend Male dogs are castrated. The age of castration is dependant on the breed and size of your dog. Castration can be performed as young as 6 months old, but we recommend waiting until at least 12 months if possible and more extended if the dog is a large breed. Female dogs are spayed. We would recommend waiting to spay a bitch after her first or second season.
