Kitten Care

We recommend all kittens have a full health check with our vet. During this initial check-up, we can run through the basics of what your kitten needs, such as vaccinations, microchipping, diet, insurance, neutering and parasite treatments.

Worming Treatments

All kittens and adult cats should be wormed against roundworms and tapeworms. Kittens are wormed every 2-3 weeks until they are 12 weeks old. Then they wormed once a month until 6 months old if they have access to outside. Adult outdoor cats can be wormed once every 3 months or regularly if they are at higher risk. For clients concerned about the excessive use of worming treatments, we can offer faecal testing for worms as an alternative.

Nasties

Flea and tick treatments can be applied as preventative once every month (or every 3 months, depending on the product). Our clients who are concerned about the excessive use of anti-parasite treatments can be used based on a risk assessment or can be applied during times of high risk. We provide free flea check and tick removal services.

Vaccinations

Kittens are vaccinated against feline panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis/herpes virus, calicivirus and feline leukaemia virus or FELV. These are given at 9 weeks old with a second injection at 12 weeks old. We would recommend the first RCP + FELV annual booster. Going forward, RCP + FELV can be performed every 1-3 years, depending on risk. There is an option for serology blood tests for those owners concerned about repeat vaccinations.

Cat Neutering

Neutering is known as castration for males and spaying for females. Neutering your pet provides many benefits, including preventing unwanted pregnancies. In all cases, the procedure is carried out on-site and requires a general anaesthetic for the surgery in our dedicated operating theatre. Cat neutering is performed in male and female cats, usually at 5-6 months old.
